There have been many authors that have had their works studied and transferred to to the big screen, including Charles Dickens, Herman Mellville, Jane Eyre, Nathanial Hawthorne, and many many more. Amoungst those authors is Edgar Allan Poe, one of America s most well-known 19th century writters. There have been many movies, songs, and characters based on the characters of Poe s works and on Poe himself in some cases. For example, The Raven has been rendered as a movie on two seperate occasions in American Cinema; once in 1963 and again in 2012. The fact that he has managed to not only have his characters as the model of other writers fictional characters, but he himself as a model for them aswell, is a massive indicator of just how long Edgar Allan Poe will be around. Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston to a family of actors. Close to Poe s birth his father left Poe s mother to care for the family on her own, aproxiamatly three years later Poe s mother died. Poe, obviously not being able to care for himself at such a young age, was brought to live with his aunt and uncle in Virginia. His uncle, John Allen, was a merchant that made his money elling tobacco.
